The user-activated soft fork (BIP 148) takes effect
BIP 148, the "user-activated soft fork" (UASF), took effect at block 478,484: nodes running it would reject any block that did not signal support for SegWit. Miners were already signalling after a compromise proposal, BIP 91, so no split followed from it.

Bitcoin Cash splits off
Bitcoin split in two when nodes following new rules, under the name Bitcoin Cash, accepted a block larger than Bitcoin's 1 MB limit. Anyone holding bitcoin before the split held the same amount of Bitcoin Cash.

SegWit locks in
SegWit locked in at block 479,808 after every one of the 2,016 blocks in the previous two-week signalling period had signalled support, more than the 95% needed. The upgrade took effect two weeks later, at block 481,824.

The value overflow incident, 2010
7 years ago. A transaction in block 74,638 created about 184 billion bitcoin by exploiting a bug in how the software added up large amounts. Satoshi Nakamoto released a fix, Bitcoin 0.3.10, the same day, and the network replaced the bad block.

SegWit activates
Segregated Witness (SegWit) took effect at block 481,824. It moves signatures into a separate part of the block, which fixes transaction malleability (the ability to change a transaction's ID before it confirms) and raises block capacity.
