Understanding mining pools

What is a mining pool?

Miners use computers to compete to find the next Bitcoin block. A pool lets many miners work together and share the rewards, so each miner’s income is less dependent on finding a block alone.

What do the counts and percentages mean?

Blocks found counts Bitcoin blocks attributed to the pool over the past seven days. Its share divides that count by all Bitcoin blocks in the same period, including those found by pools outside this directory, so the listed shares need not add up to 100%.

“No blocks in the past 7 days” means the data loaded and the pool found none. “Unavailable” means the statistics couldn’t be loaded; it doesn’t mean the pool found no blocks.

Block share is a measure of recent activity, not a rating of a pool’s quality or a promise about when your payment will confirm.

Does the pool name identify an individual miner?

The name on a block usually identifies a pool. It does not tell us which individual person or machine found it, or who sent a payment in that block. Pool labels come from clues in the block and can sometimes be unknown or wrong.

Looking for your payment?

You don’t need to know who mined it. Search for your transaction to see whether it has arrived.
