  • The user-activated soft fork (BIP 148) takes effect, 2017

9 years ago. BIP 148, the "user-activated soft fork" (UASF), took effect at block 478,484: nodes running it would reject any block that did not signal support for SegWit. Miners were already signalling after a compromise proposal, BIP 91, so no split followed from it.

  • BIP-110 supporters split onto a minority chain

Nodes enforcing BIP-110, a proposed one-year soft fork (a tightening of the rules) to restrict non-financial data such as inscriptions, rejected block 961,632 because it did not signal support, and followed a rival block instead. Only about 2.5% of recent blocks had signalled for it, so the main chain kept going and the BIP-110 chain fell behind.

  • The value overflow incident, 2010

16 years ago. A transaction in block 74,638 created about 184 billion bitcoin by exploiting a bug in how the software added up large amounts. Satoshi Nakamoto released a fix, Bitcoin 0.3.10, the same day, and the network replaced the bad block.

  • SegWit activates, 2017

9 years ago. Segregated Witness (SegWit) took effect at block 481,824. It moves signatures into a separate part of the block, which fixes transaction malleability (the ability to change a transaction's ID before it confirms) and raises block capacity.
