Proposed changing Bitcoin's mining puzzle to one best solved by light-based chips that use much less energy.

Mining uses a lot of electricity, so it mostly pays where power is cheap. This BIP suggested a new puzzle, optical proof of work, to shift miners' main cost from electricity to equipment, so more people could mine and fewer would switch off when rewards shrink.
