BlackRock files for a spot bitcoin ETF
BlackRock asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission to register shares in the iShares Bitcoin Trust, a proposed exchange-traded fund (ETF) that would hold bitcoin itself and trade on Nasdaq like a share. Coinbase was named to look after the trust's bitcoin.

EU crypto rules (MiCA) enter into force
The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), one set of rules for crypto issuers and service providers across the EU, entered into force. Most of it applied from 30 December 2024.
