Proposed encrypting the traffic between Bitcoin nodes so outsiders can't easily read it or tamper with it unseen.

Nodes talked to each other unencrypted, so an internet provider could link a user to their addresses and see the amount and recipient of new payments. Encryption would make that much harder and make tampering detectable, though message sizes and timing would still show.
