What is bitcoin.org?
The website Satoshi Nakamoto registered in August 2008. It published the Bitcoin white paper and still hosts it. Volunteers run it today.
Satoshi Nakamoto registered bitcoin.org on 18 August 2008, ten weeks before announcing Bitcoin. The white paper has been published there ever since, at bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf.
The site’s own history says it was first owned by Satoshi and Martti Malmi, Bitcoin’s first two developers, and that when Satoshi left, ownership passed “to additional people, separate from the Bitcoin developers”. It describes itself as “an independent open source project”.
In 2021 Craig Wright, who claimed to be Satoshi, sued the site’s anonymous operator, known as Cøbra, and his claim left the white paper inaccessible from bitcoin.org. After the High Court ruled in 2024 that Wright is not Satoshi, the judge set aside the 2021 judgment against Cøbra, because it “was obtained in a claim which was fraudulent”.
